Adam Collings has a passion for California's history so much so that he has spent the past 28 years of his life researching the subject.  The result, a bestselling author's latest book "California-West of the West."

Adam's presentation focused mainly on an event that overnight changed California and the world-Gold.
John Sutter had come to California seeking a new life.  He established Sutters Fort at present day Sacramento.  In 1845 he contracted with James Marshall to build a saw mill next to the American River at a place called Coloma.  It was there Marshall discovered gold.  People stampeded to the area, overran the Sutter holdings.  Their collective legacy- California would go on to become the 6th largest ecomony in the world.

Adam is a local product having lived in Garden Grove in his early years and now San Clemente.  He has written some 5l published or produced books to date.  We were fortunate to have had the
opportunity of hearing this fascinating excerpt  from his latest.  Perhaps he will return for more.

ADAM COLLINGS - THE HATE STOPS HERE

May 15 to 21, 2011  is National Law Enforcement Week.

One of our San Francisco based sponsors has reported being contacted last week by a woman claiming to represent Adam Collings.  The female, who identified herself as Terry,  proceeded to negotiate away the author's $5000 speaking engagement fee for an upcoming event in Marin County, asking rather that the sponsor supply Mr. Collings with nothing more than a case of wine for hosting his program.

For the past few years this same individual has pulled similiar heists, leaving Adam sans speaking fees but amply supplied with fruit and cheese platters etc.  It really is funny.  And it really is a felony.  ATT pointing out that Adam's own landline was being tapped and his cell hacked with every call  being rerouted through an unlisted landline. 

Adam estimates his losses in said heist at several million dollars.  The landline has been identified as 714-701-2804  in Yorba Linda, California.

Mr. Collings is asking that anyone of his sponsors or readers being contacted by this individual report the same to the Orange County Sheriff's Department at 949-770-6011 as well as to Adam directly  who has filed an unlimited civil suit in said case.

The term "INDEPENDENT HISTORIAN," is perhaps best defined by ADAM COLLINGS.  In 1977 he launched his own career as a professional writer, editor and publisher with what he describes as "an innocuous little book celebrating the virtues of Orange County. "   That "innocuous little book" went on to sell 60,000 copies.
Suddenly Collings found himself digging into library archives to meet the demands of corporate California.  Home Federal Savings wanted 100,000 copies of a book entitled SAN DIEGO.  Great American Savings Bank requested 200,000 copies of Adam's CALIFORNIA, THE GOLDEN STATE.  Home Federal Savings returning with an order for 300,000 copies of Collings's book THE WEST.

There have been 53 such publication in various forms, as well as "complete guides" for California, Western National Parks, et al.  Nor does Adam's creativity stop there having designed and launched storybook calendars for DISNEYLAND as well as bumper stickers and posters for non-profit organizations.

Still, Adam finds time each week to volunteer a minimum of eight hours for organizations and causes focused  upon strengthening community and protecting the environment..

Adam is at work now in completing his four volume CALIFORNIA WEST OF THE WEST, which celebrates "an unpredented land and its people," to quote the author himself.  "In my humble opinion," he says, ":this is a story that has never been adequately told,"  Collings also believes that California's story is "one of the greatest social experiments since the advent of Rome."

Underscoring all of Adam's endeavors has been his self-styled approach to research.  An honor graduate of Garden Grove Hish School in 1972, he began his career working for Retlaw Enterprises (today the Walt Disney Family Foundation) onsite at Disneyland. There he remained, "out amongst the Story itself," he says, while completing an AA Degree in Business Administration at Fullerton College and studies in Environmental Design at Cal Poly Pomona  (he wanted to help install EPCOT as envisioned by Walt Disney). 

In the middle of these endeavors The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints called upon Adam to serve a two year mission in then war torn Santiago, Chile.  Returning thereafter to Disneyland he found himself being pressed into service by his Church again, this time as a Seminary teacher.  Elder Collings
thereafter adding to his credentials by graduating from the LDS Institute of Religion.

The young Mr Collings continued extensive studies in  private collections across the State, including the Braun Reserach Institute at the Southwest Museum.  Dedicated to accuracy and thorough research, he inhabits his Story, interviewing descendants and visiting the homesteads and historic sites related to his subjects.

"It's history, not fiction," Collings said. "I laid it out as if it were an epic poem. It is its own thing... There are some fans and detractors. Dear Monsignor,

Forgive my approaching you directly, but after more than a decade of attempting to resolve this matter on my own I feel compelled to press for your intervention.

In the midst of researching my life’s work, CALIFORNIA/WEST OF THE WEST, I opted to give my tithing to aid with renovating the Diocesan Archives.  I should note that I am not Catholic, but rather LDS (Mormon) and that as a Mormon have always given a minimum of ten percent of my income and ten percent of my time to God AND community.

It was suggested thereafter, by Monsignor Paul Martin, what with my extensive work scripting both a narrative of California’s shared cultural heritage and biography of MY California hero, J Serra and my familiarity with the facilities that no one stood better suited to serve as curator for Mission San Juan Capistrano.  Having just submitted a  proposal on topic to Disney’s California Adventure Theme Park I found the prospect at San Juan exciting and enthusiastically proceeded with “Imagineering” the mission.

That which followed can only be described as unconscionable.  Punished for said contributions, I found myself being hounded into assisting with endless hours of genealogical work and “worked,” as if retired or unemployed, as a docent.

Gratefully I stayed with it, and collaborated.  Had I done otherwise I would not have been present to witness Jerry Miller, as Executive Director of the Mission, claim credit (and accept monies) for work that I had "contributed," while simultaneously burying me under a flood of slander; the mission rumor mill accusing Adam Collings of everything from plagiarism to pedophilia.

I continue to endure this charade of watching now Executive Director Mechelle Lawrence launch programs extracted from my laboriously garnered research and the innovative designs that brought me into contact with this sordid state of affairs in the first place.

I never asked the Diocese or Mission parish for anything in return for my tithe (totaling in excess of $50,000).  Having said that I have since been informed that at that time an honorable and like minded Mission Board Member responded by earmarking funds to aid ME with MY OWN work on, CALIFORNIA/WEST OF THE WEST.   Said funds, I understand, were rather diverted to a Mr. Doug Westfall and used to publish a book for Father Bill Krekelberg?

So it is that today I ask you directly for an intervention.

Might I offer up, merely as suggestions, several courses of action.

FIRST COURSE OF ACTION: Proceed with installation of myself as a paid curator at the Mission.  Perhaps by so doing I might find it possible to follow through on my previously CONTRIBUTED work while at the same time sustain publication of MY OWN work, from which I earned the livelihood previously tithed.

Additionally, I do not need to inform the Diocese that this historic and sacred site is being held hostage, as it were, by both Anthony Rivera, a dangerously bigoted Mormon Native American Elder  and Born Again Evangelical "Catholic" Mechelle Lawrence.  No one sits better positioned to deal with said set of circumstances than someone such as myself.

SECOND COURSE OF ACTION:  Sponsor one hundred copies of CALIFORNIA WEST OF THE WEST to be distributed free of charge at Mission San Juan Capistrano during the upcoming Swallows Day festivities.  At $50 a copy this will set the Mission back $5,000 (if the Mission suggests that they have already done this they so say in error.  Several years ago I came in to lecture and sign this book as I have at many other venues, during the course of which the Mission not only recouped their investment but garnered an additional percentage from the sell of every book).

Prolific writer and historian Adam Collings spoke to the general membership on a chilly February Saturday.  Collings considers his latest book, "California, West of the West," the compilation of his life's work.

Mr. Collings began his writing career by penning "Sendero, The Complete Guide to Orange County California." 
After selling 60,000 copies he went on to write guides for San Diego and other local areas. 

Adam's keen interest in California history was sparked while living in Santiago, Chile when he came across an account of California's "discovery" by Spanish Conquistadors. 
In South America Mr. Collings not only "survived" the overthrow of the Allende government but
became acquainted with the Franciscan Order that had played such an integral role in launching California as we know it today.

Years later Adam would be granted access to the Franciscan Archives in Santa Barbara, California. 
He has also relied upon private collections, including that of his own, as well as those of the
Southwest Museum, Bancoft Library at UC Berkeley, et al to pursue his studies.
